Kenyan President William Ruto has announced a 22-member Cabinet two weeks after taking office, naming close political allies in key ministries.

Ruto made the announcement on Monday at State House in Nairobi, flanked by some of his key allies.

The president in his televised address announced the introduction of a new Prime Cabinet Secretary position to be held by Musalia Mudavadi as he pledged in his campaign trail.

Ruto also appointed former Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua to be the cabinet secretary for Foreign Affairs and Kithure Kindiki, former Senate deputy speaker, as the cabinet secretary for Interior.

The president in his address also announced broader responsibilities for the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

"It is important that we set up the new cabinet early so that we can quickly take charge of the affairs of our country and begin the process of implementing the plan that we set out before the people of Kenya and persuaded them to vote for us on the basis of that plan," Ruto said.

The president also took the opportunity to announce that he had accepted a terminal leave request by the Police Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai, who was taken ill at the height of vote counting after the August 9 General Elections.

He noted that Mutyambai will remain on the terminal leave until the end of his tenure in about six months.

Ruto also announced that he had accepted the resignation of George Kinoti as the Director of Criminal Investigations.

He announced that more government appointments would be announced in due course.
