The jet fuel shortage in South Africa's Cape Town International Airport is now set to ease after a ship ferrying the much-sought after commodity docked in the city's harbor.

Airlines had complained about the disruption that the fuel shortage had caused.

On Saturday, American carrier United Airlines canceled its scheduled flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Cape Town, to avoid the aircraft getting stranded in the airport.

The national carrier, South African Airlines, however did not cancel any flights.

According to local News24 media outlet, jet fuel deliveries to the airport are expected to resume on Tuesday evening, after the necessary quality processes have been completed.

Last week, Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) said that the shortage of fuel puts into perspective South Africa's vulnerability, owed to reliance on imported jet fuel.

The association also called on the government and fuel suppliers to urgently put in place a more robust resilience plan to ensure sufficient stocks of aviation fuel.
