Namibian President Hage Geingob on Monday hosted Qatar's energy minister Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi for talks on energy cooperation between their two countries.
According to the Namibian Presidency, Monday's meeting discussed recent oil discoveries in Namibia and plans between the two countries to move from the discovery and development phase to derive benefits for both countries and their people.
Namibia and Qatar signed an energy cooperation agreement in March 2022, which provides the framework for cooperation between Qatar Energy and the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia Exploration and Production (NAMCOR E&P) to support and develop a sustainable upstream oil and gas sector in the Southern African country, including the provision of opportunities for the training and development of NAMCOR employees in industry-based skills.
With the oil drilling plans carrying on, Namibia is confident the product can bolster its economy in the years ahead.
In July, Jennifer Comalie, chairperson of National Petroleum Corp. of Namibia, said in a Bloomberg TV interview that the oil discoveries could help double the country's economy by 2040.
