The 2022 Formula 1 Champion Max Verstappen may add yet another feat to his impressive season if he wins the Mexican Grand Prix, which would set a new record for most wins in a season.

The Red Bull driver is currently tied on 13 wins with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, but still has three races to better his tally.

The 25-year-old took pole on Saturday ahead of the Sunday race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez ahead of the Mercedes pair of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton respectively.

Verstappen set the a best qualifying time of 1:17.775, some 0.304s ahead of Russel's time, and Hamilton another 0.005s off.

The second Red Bull car driven by home boy Sergio Perez will start in fourth place with a time of 1:18.128.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz will start in fifth place ahead of Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas.

Sainz's teammate Charles Leclerc will start in seventh place ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris. The two Alpine cars driven by Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon respectively round off the top half the grid.

"It was a good qualifying. I think it was a close one, but I think after FP3 we made a few adjustments and the car got into a better rhythm. To be on pole here is of course amazing. It is a very long run down to Turn 1, so we do need a good start but anyway I think we have a quick car and that is of course what is most important," said Verstappen.

He pointed out that he expects a good fight for the win, and will be hoping to fend off the attack by the Silver Arrows behind him.

"I think if we have good race pace, it will be a good fight [for the victory]. Of course, we'll try to stay ahead [of Russell and Hamilton] into Turn 1," he said.
