The Islamic State group claimed responsibility Monday for an attack in eastern DR Congo that killed at least 23 civilians.

The jihadist group said on messaging app Telegram that IS militants attacked the village of Makugwe overnight Sunday in the Beni area of North Kivu province, and burned down several houses.

Congolese officials had earlier on Monday blamed suspected Allied Democratic Forces fighters, which the Islamic State group claims as its central African affiliate.
