Six people, including the attacker, have been killed in a shooting attack that took place on Tuesday night near La Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba in southern Tunisia, Tunisian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"Among the victims are three agents of the National Guard and two civilians, one French and the other Tunisian-French," the ministry said in a statement.

An investigation is underway to determine the responsibilities for "this cowardly attack."

The ministry stressed that "this attack on innocent people will only strengthen the unity of the country and its determination to continue its relentless resistance to all forms of crime and defeat those behind it."

On Tuesday night, a guardsman affiliated with the National Guard opened fire at security staff stationed near the synagogue, leaving two visitors and other security officers killed, before being killed during an exchange of fire.

Several others, including security officers and civilians, were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
