Cape Town, the oldest city and the legislative capital of South Africa, is spending hundreds of millions on the country's largest-ever sewer upgrade.

The 715-million-rand (about 37.8 million U.S. dollars) pipeline rehabilitation project is expected to benefit around 300,000 households in lower-income neighborhoods in Cape Town, according to a press statement released Friday on the official website of the city government.

The city is on track to complete the full 28 kilometers of pipeline rehabilitation by 2025, said the statement.

"With this historic project -- the largest ever undertaken in democratic South Africa -- we are upgrading bulk sewers first constructed at the height of apartheid in the 1960s, and future-proofing these for the next 100 years to the benefit of future generations of Capetonians," Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis was quoted as saying.

"When we talk of our long-term vision of building a city of hope for all, it really comes down to bread and butter projects like this, which bring about better living conditions for residents," said the mayor, who inspected progress on the project earlier on Thursday.

He added that over the next three years, Cape Town will also invest 1.3 billion rands (about 68.7 million dollars) in major bulk sewer upgrades to areas across the city.
