A 38-year-old Tunisian was stabbed on Monday evening by an illegal sub-Saharan immigrant in southeastern Tunisia's Sfax Province, private radio station Mosaique FM reported on Tuesday.
"A Tunisian was killed last night around 11 p.m. (10 GMT) in Sakiet Eddaier's delegation," Mosaique FM quoted the spokesperson for the Court of Sfax Faouzi Masmoudi, as saying.
Masmoudi added that "civil protection units tried to save the victim without success."
Masmoudi said that an investigation for premeditated murder has been opened and that three sub-Saharan suspects have been taken into custody.
Masmoudi added that acts of violence in several regions of Sfax province broke out between Tunisians and sub-Saharans.
On June 19, Tunisian President Kais Saied Monday met with visiting French and German interior ministers, Gerald Darmanin and Nancy Faeser, to discuss the issue of illegal immigration.
During the meeting, Saied said Tunisia would not be a guardian of Europe's borders in preventing the flow of illegal immigrants as the country will only guard its own borders.
"Tunisia will not accept the settlement of immigrants on its soil," the president said, calling for a collective approach to eliminating the root causes of illegal immigration.
