UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on the international community to support the victims and survivors of terrorism and use their experiences to create change for a better future.

Guterres made the appeal in a message to mark the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, which falls on August 21.

The theme of this year's international day is "Legacy: Finding Hope and Building a Peaceful Future."

"On this day, we pay our respects to all those lost or harmed through terrorist attacks around the world," said Guterres. "We pay tribute to the extraordinary work of those victims and survivors who have resolved to use their experiences to bring about change."

"Let us all commit to support victims and survivors, to amplify their voices, to work together to ensure that the lives taken and changed by terrorism are never forgotten. And to build a better future for us all," he said.

The UN General Assembly in 2017 established August 21 as the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.

The day honors, remembers and pays tribute to all victims and survivors of terrorism across the world, highlighting the importance of global solidarity and ensuring their stories and experiences are not forgotten.
