Lebanese FM says studying solutions to Syrian refugee crisis

Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib on Monday said his ministry is studying solutions to the Syrian displacement crisis in Lebanon as the international community and the UN refused the safe return of the refugees to their homeland.

"There is a specialized team at the foreign affairs ministry that will develop proposals, which we will discuss during our next visit to Damascus and (we will) listen to Syrian proposals," local newspaper Al-Joumhouria quoted Bou Habib as saying.

Bou Habib said the United Nations considers the situation in Syria unsafe and pays money for refugees in Lebanon and other refugee-hosting countries. Meanwhile, there is no international decision to allow their return to homeland.

Lebanon remains the country hosting the largest number of refugees per capita, with an estimated 1.5 million-2 million Syrian refugees scattered across the country.

Lebanese officials insist on returning Syrian refugees to their homeland as the country's internal security and economic situation can no longer tolerate their stay in Lebanon.
