At least two killed as Cyclone Hamoon lashes SE Bangladesh

At least two people were killed and scores of others injured as Cyclone Hamoon lashed parts of southeastern Bangladesh Wednesday.

Trees felled by the storm have cut off road connectivity in Chattogram district, some 242 km southeast of capital Dhaka, leaving two persons including a man and a woman dead, said a local police official who declined to be named.

He said the storm left a trail of destruction, uprooting hundreds of trees, flattening many tin and mud-built houses in the district, and snapping road and rail communication with affected areas.

The official said about 100 others have been injured in Chattogram.

He said they are collecting information through official channels from the affected remote areas on the loss of life and damage to property.

Bangladeshi State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Enamur Rahman told journalists that they have taken adequate measures to support the affected people in Chattogram where hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated.

Officials said Hamoon had already weakened and was being gradually reduced to a depression.
