China's Zheng Qinwen claimed the gold medal in the women 's Olympic singles tennis tournament on Saturday after defeating Donna Vekić of Croatia in the final.

Zheng won the match 6-2, 6-3 at Roland Garros to claim an historic first singles gold medal for China in Olympic tennis.

Zheng had a solid run in Paris only dropping two sets in the entire tournament, and famously defeated reigning French Open champion and pre-tournament favourite Iga Świątek of Poland in the semifinals on Thursday.

Zheng’s achievement continues to shine a light on her breakthrough year in which she reached her first Grand Slam singles final at the Australian Open in January, and broke into the world’s top 10 rankings.

Following Zheng's victory, China now has 16 gold medals at the Olympic Games in Paris, four more than second-placed Australia.
