At least 41 people are confirmed dead following flash floods across Morocco.

In the Atlantic coastal province of Safi, local authorities said in a statement that the death toll had risen to 37, with 14 injured people receiving treatment at local hospitals.

Intense thunderstorms pelted the area with heavy rain, flooding dozens of homes and shops on Sunday. The floods also overturned or washed away vehicles, damaged roads and caused widespread traffic disruptions.

In the southern province of Tinghir, four people died after their vehicle was swept away by strong currents and overturned into a river.

Schools were closed in four provinces on Monday, and large-scale emergency response operations were launched.

Moroccan authorities warned that more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
