Senegal was elected to lead the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the 2026–2030 term.
The decision was made during the 68th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, held in Abuja, Nigeria, on Sunday, December 14.
It marks the first time that the West African country has been entrusted with the presidency of the ECOWAS Commission.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye thanked member states for their "confidence" and committed to continuing work toward a stronger, more integrated ECOWAS focused on peace and stability.
The duties of the President of the ECOWAS Commission include implementing regional policies, coordinating development programs, representing ECOWAS internationally, and ensuring effective management, staffing, and responsible use of financial resources across Community institutions.
Established in 1975, ECOWAS currently has 12 member states, after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced their withdrawal from the organization in January 2025.
