In September 2021, Guinea experienced a coup that resulted in the removal of then-president Alpha Conde and brought Colonel Mamady Doumbouya to power.
On December 28, 2025, voters in Guinea are scheduled to cast ballots in a national election, marking a key milestone in the country’s political transition.
How many candidates are running for Guinea’s presidency?
The December vote is significant because it is meant to mark the end of the transition period and the start of a new constitutional era.
Nine candidates are on the ballot, but Guinea's most influential opposition leaders are notably absent. Their exclusion has left the opposition dominated by lesser-known figures with limited national support.
As interim president, Doumbouya enters the election as the clear favorite. His backers point to new roads, hospitals, and schools, as well as progress on the long-delayed Simandou iron ore project.
How is the vote decided in Guinea?
Around 6.7 million registered voters are eligible to cast ballots. The president is elected by an absolute majority using a two-round system.
If no candidate secures over 50 percent in the first round, a runoff will be held between the top two contenders.
Voting is scheduled to run from morning to evening, with provisional results expected within 48 hours. Regional and international observers from ECOWAS, the African Union, the United Nations, and other organizations are monitoring the process.
