Guinean leader Mamady Doumbouya has been elected president. According to provisional results announced on Tuesday, he won 86.72 percent of the December 28 polls. Voter turnout stood at 80.95 percent, according to Djenabou Toure, head of the General Directorate of Elections.

The Supreme Court now has eight days to validate the results in the event of any challenge.

Doumbouya's victory secures him a seven-year mandate and completes a return to civilian rule in the West African nation.

Doumbouya, 41, faced eight rivals for the presidency, but the main opposition leaders were barred from running and had urged a boycott of the vote.
