A 16-storey building under construction collapsed early Friday in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, leaving at least four people feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The collapse occurred in the South C area and was reported to authorities at around 4:30 a.m. local time, police said.
Rescue teams worked to clear debris at the site, the Kenya Red Cross said, adding that a multi-agency response team had been deployed to manage the situation.
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku told reporters that four people were believed to be trapped.
The National Construction Authority confirmed the building was registered but said it was non-compliant at the time of the collapse.
Rescue operations were temporarily suspended in the afternoon after a neighboring 14-storey building began to shake. Nairobi County officials later classified the adjacent structure as high risk, citing possible structural damage caused by vibrations from the collapse.
Operations later resumed, with police sniffer dogs deployed to assist in the search and recovery efforts.
