The African Union (AU) has expressed grave concern over the deposition of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and military attacks on state institutions by the United States. The AU reaffirmed its commitment to international law, emphasizing respect for state sovereignty and the right to self-determination, as outlined in the United Nations Charter.

Maduro landed Saturday evening at a small airport in New York following a midnight operation that extracted him and his wife, Cilia Flores, from their home at a military base in Caracas. The AU underscored the importance of dialogue and peaceful dispute resolution, saying that Venezuela’s internal challenges can only be resolved through inclusive political dialogue.

South Africa also voiced concern, with its Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation warning that military interventions lead to instability and deeper crises. It called on the United Nations Security Council to urgently convene and address the situation.

Similarly, the Ghanaian government expressed alarm at US actions in Venezuela, deeming them a unilateral use of force that violates international law and undermines sovereignty.

"The Ghanaian government is keenly following the situation in Venezuela with great concern and notes that such assaults on international law, attempts at occupying foreign territories, and apparent external control of oil resources have extremely adverse implications for international stability and the global order," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ghana further remarked that recent statements by US President Donald Trump asserting intentions to control Venezuela and its natural resources echo colonial and imperialist precedents, setting a dangerous example for the global order.
