Long Way Home: Reclaiming Africa's Culture Heritage

Faces of Africa

 , Updated 22:02, 08-Jan-2026
Africa;

As global museum systems increasingly confront the legacy of colonialism, the ownership of African artifacts is sparking a sustained and complex international debate. Artifacts taken from Africa during the colonial period are still widely held in European museums, and their historical provenance, cultural context, and ethical implications continue to be questioned.

This film focuses on the artistic practice of Nigerian performance artist Jelili Atticu. Through performance art, Atticu brings to life looted African artifacts, performing in several European museums. He engages in a dialogue with the museum space through his body and rituals, directly confronting the display environment of these artifacts and seeking to rekindle their connection with their original communities.

Through the artist's personal actions, the film explores multidimensional reflections on cultural ownership, historical responsibility, and the museum system. Situated at the intersection of personal expression and public space, the film presents a contemporary discussion on African cultural heritage and documents the ongoing process of artifact repatriation.
