Sudan condemns African Union-UAE joint statement

Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing deep regret over the content of a joint statement issued on Tuesday by the African Union (AU) Commission and the United Arab Emirates.

The joint statement, following a meeting at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, called for an immediate, unconditional humanitarian truce, a permanent ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access throughout Sudan, accountability for violations of international humanitarian law, and the establishment of a civilian government in Sudan.

In its response on Wednesday, the Sudanese Ministry criticized the statement for lacking objectivity and professionalism, arguing that it "presented a misleading narrative equating the legitimate government of Sudan with an armed militia previously designated as terrorist and condemned by the international community, including the African Union itself."

Sudan also rejected the call for an unconditional humanitarian truce, stating it conflicted with the country’s approach to a ceasefire under ongoing regional and international peace initiatives. The ministry further noted that issuing the statement outside official AU forums and alongside a non-member state undermines the principle of “African solutions to African problems."
