Hamas officials opened talks in Cairo with Egyptian mediators on forming a technocratic committee to administer Gaza, as part of a US-brokered ceasefire plan.
According to Hamas, the discussions focus on the committee's structure, mandate and operating mechanisms. The proposed body would run Gaza during a transitional period under a plan unveiled by US President Donald Trump last October, which envisions governance by a Palestinian technocratic committee overseen by an international "Board of Peace.”
Hamas delegates are also expected to hold parallel talks with other Palestinian factions in Cairo, including discussions on political developments, the ceasefire and alleged Israeli violations, as well as the makeup and leadership of the proposed committee.
The group has reiterated that it does not seek a formal role in governing Gaza, saying it would instead monitor the process to support stability and reconstruction.
Negotiations are also expected to cover the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the reopening of the Rafah border crossing, the entry of aid currently held on the Egyptian side, and preparations for the second phase of the ceasefire.
Egypt is separately working to bring Hamas and the rival Fatah movement together to resolve remaining differences. Hamas officials say broad consensus among Palestinian factions is required before the committee is established, after which President Mahmoud Abbas would issue a decree formalizing it.
Former Palestinian Authority official Ali Shaath and Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan are among the names being discussed as potential heads of the committee, according to people familiar with the talks.
