Voting began Thursday in Uganda's presidential election. Crowds gathered in long lines in some areas as polling station openings were delayed and voting materials were seen being delivered after the scheduled opening time.

According to AFP, shortly after 7:00 a.m. local time (04:00 GMT), voting had commenced in at least one suburb of the capital, Kampala.

In Jinja, a border town known for its strategic significance, heavy security measures were in place, with both police and military forces conducting extensive patrols.

Over 21.6 million voters have registered for the election.

According to CGTN correspondent, Isabel Nakirya, turnout is steady despite initial technical issues.  

Elections results are expected in the coming days.
