Africa in Pictures: Talanta Sports City brings Kenya's sports dreams to reality

Talanta Sports City is a landmark infrastructure project in Nairobi, Kenya, designed to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and meet the requirements for rugby matches. Covering a total area of 45.64 hectares in the urban area of Nairobi, its core function is to serve as the main venue for the opening and closing ceremonies and key matches of the AFCON 2027, while meeting the needs of local comprehensive sports events, cultural activities and public leisure.

The project features a 60,000-seat professional football stadium, meeting FIFA standards. Once completed, it will become one of the most modern professional stadium in Africa. The main structure is made of steel and concrete, with the canopy adopting a lightweight cable-membrane structure. The stadium's exterior design incorporates elements of Kenya shield and spear culture, combining grandeur with elegance.

Constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), the project broke ground in March 2024 and became home to over 200 Chinese staff and more than 3,000 local  Kenyan workers. It not only carries Kenya's dream of becoming a sports power, but also bears witness to the profound friendship between Chinese and Kenyan builders. Hailed as a model of South-South cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, Talanta Sports City is expected to contribute to the realization of Kenya's sporting vision and boost regional cultural and tourism development.
