Ethiopian Airlines placed a new order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets amid rising long-haul travel demand, both companies said on Tuesday.
The airline plans to deploy the 787-9 aircraft to expand its global network, which already spans 145 international destinations.
The latest purchase adds to an earlier commitment for 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets announced at the Dubai Airshow, bringing the carrier's total new Boeing orders to 20 fuel-efficient aircraft, all of which were finalized in December 2025.
"This order underscores our continued commitment to enhancing our fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, thereby further strengthening our customer service,” Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew said in a statement on the airline's website. Tasew added that the company would acquire more aircraft as part of its "strategic vision to advance sustainable aviation.”
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates the largest Dreamliner fleet on the continent. It uses its 787-8 and 787-9 jets on intercontinental routes linking Addis Ababa with major destinations in Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as key intra-African markets.
