The European Union has announced it is allocating around $2.3 million in humanitarian aid to support communities affected by renewed violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as humanitarian needs continue to rise.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the EU said the funding will provide urgent assistance to thousands of vulnerable people affected by the conflict, which has displaced an estimated 500,000 people. More than 90,000 of them have fled across the border into neighbouring Burundi.

The emergency response programme will run until the end of June 2026 and will focus on internally displaced persons (IDPs) in some of the hardest-hit areas, including Uvira, Fizi and Kalehe.

Ongoing fighting in the eastern DR Congo has triggered large-scale displacement across South Kivu and into neighbouring countries, stretching already limited local resources as thousands continue to flee the violence.
