A “smart village” initiative is giving hope to locals in southern Madagascar by providing internet connectivity through solar power.

The Ministry of Digital Development, Postal and Telecommunications, in conjunction with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other partners, has set up the facility with the aim of bringing connectivity, energy and water to local communities.

According to the World Food Programme, the project, managed by local authorities, offers integrated community services, including training centres for women and youth in food production and business skills, as well as digital classrooms. It also enhances agricultural production through solar-powered drip irrigation and hydroponics.

The pilot project, which follows years of food insecurity, is also helping to improve the nutritional situation, according to data obtained by the WFP.

This has been achieved through solar-powered refrigeration, electric cookers introduced in school canteens, and real-time access to information, reducing deforestation and boosting trade.

According to local media, the facility is part of a broader government policy to bridge the digital divide and enhance access to public services in remote areas. So far, it has benefited more than 10,000 people daily and trained over 1,200 young people in digital skills.
