Over two million people in Kenya face acute food shortages, and urgent support is needed, according to the Red Cross.

Data from the Kenya Meteorological Department shows that 23 of the country’s 47 counties risk losing livestock after failed short rains between October and December 2025.

The Red Cross reported that nutritional deterioration across eight counties has reached a critical phase, while three counties are in serious conditions. About 780,000 children are malnourished, and 300,000 households are in need of water.

On January 27, the organization’s Secretary General, Ahmed Idris, said the situation is worsening as the country sinks deeper into the dry spell.

“Malnutrition cases are rising, with rates as high as 53 percent,” he said.

In response to the drought, the Red Cross said it has provided water to more than 63,000 people, as well as food, nutrition, and cash assistance.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, said the government is ready to support affected populations.

"The government is well prepared to deal with the drought crisis. We have enough food supplies, and we are starting the distribution of animal feed in all counties affected by drought."

"The government has spent about $46.6 million to provide food and animal feed to affected areas," Ruku added.
