Two attacks in the space of a few days left 30 people dead in two neighboring towns in Nigeria's central state of Benue, long prone to inter-communal clashes, AFP reported.
On Friday afternoon, armed bandits killed at least 13 traders in Anwase, a village in the Kwande area, according to local government officials.
The attackers reportedly stormed the market and opened fire indiscriminately, leaving traders and residents traumatized. Many properties were destroyed, and families are now searching for missing loved ones.
Earlier, on February 3, armed men attacked the market in the nearby town of Mbaikyor, killing 17 people, including a police officer, according to two local residents and media reports.
The region has experienced an increase in violence in recent months, often involving herders and farmers amid competition for land and resources.
Although the violence is often described as communal clashes, the conflict is driven by a complex set of factors, including land disputes exacerbated by climate change and the proliferation of small arms.
