At least 30 people have died after a truck overloaded with passengers and goods crashed in Nigeria’s northwestern Kano State, authorities said on Sunday.

The vehicle reportedly lost control while travelling on a major highway and plunged off the road at Kwanar Barde, a village in the Gezawa local government area. Several others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, officials said.

A spokesman for the state government, Bature Dawakin-Tofa, blamed the crash on reckless driving.

Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf described the incident as "unfortunate," and directed local health authorities to provide free and timely medical services to survivors.

The incident has reignited calls by officials for stricter compliance with traffic regulations.
