Sudanese sources announced that at least 21 people died after a ferry boat capsized on the Nile River in Sudan.

A source at Sudan's Civil Defense Authority told Xinhua that the boat capsized due to high waves.

The Sudanese Doctors Network stated that the ferry was carrying more than 27 people, including women, children, and the elderly, traveling between the Tayba al-Khawad and Deim al-Quray areas in the Shandi locality of River Nile State, when it capsized under circumstances that have not yet been officially determined.

The group's statement also noted that six people survived and that Civil Defense teams are searching for the remaining victims.

The network highlighted the vulnerability of river transport and the absence of basic safety standards, urging relevant authorities to act swiftly by deploying specialized rescue teams and search-and-recovery equipment.

It also called for immediate measures to strengthen river transport safety and prevent similar tragedies.
