The death toll from Tropical Cyclone Gezani has risen to 36, authorities confirmed Thursday.

The National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNRGC) said it had recorded 36 deaths, six people remained missing and at least 374 were injured.

More than 8,800 people have been displaced, the agency added.

Madagascar's new leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, called for "international solidarity" after the cyclone "ravaged up to 75 percent of Toamasina and its surrounds."

The BNRGC said more than 18,000 homes were destroyed and 50,000 damaged or flooded.

Cyclone Gezani made landfall Tuesday, striking the eastern port city of Toamasina with winds up to 250 kilometres per hour.
