Zimbabwe suspended the export of all raw minerals and lithium concentrates with immediate effect, citing alleged malpractices and leakages in the sector.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development said the ban applies to all minerals, including shipments currently in transit, and will remain in force until further notice.

"Government expects cooperation of the mining industry on this measure which has been taken in the national interest." the statement said, adding that authorities remain committed to promoting in-country value addition, beneficiation, compliance and accountability in the export of Zimbabwe's mineral resources.

In a February 17 letter to the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe, the mines ministry said it would realign export procedures amid concerns over "continued malpractices during the exportation of minerals." The review, it noted, forms part of broader efforts to curb leakages and improve efficiency within the system.

The move accelerates plans to restrict exports of lithium concentrates, which had previously been expected to take effect in 2027 as Zimbabwe pushes for increased local processing and value addition.
