The Chengdu code: Why China's 'slow life' city is moving fast toward my heart

They say that if you want to understand the soul of China, you have to find a seat at a tea house in Chengdu. This week, I did exactly that—and I think I finally cracked the "Happiness Code."

This wasn't my first time in the capital of Sichuan. I visited back in 2019. But returning in 2026 has been a completely different experience. This wasn't just a reporting trip; it was the most immersive, vibrant, and delicious journey I've had in China to date.

The art of the "slow life"

My journey began at the Heming Tea House. Sitting among the rising steam of jasmine tea and the rhythmic clink of porcelain, the world felt still. I watched people get the famous "ear cleaning" treatment—a local tradition that is as much about trust as it is about relaxation.

In the nearby People's Park, the energy shifted. Retirement here isn't a quiet affair; it's a festival. I saw "dancing aunties and uncles" moving in perfect synchronization and choirs singing with enough passion to reach the skyscrapers.

The "Analog" Algorithm

One of the most fascinating stops was the Matchmaking Corner. In an era of dating apps and 5G, I found a "wall of hope"—thousands of blue and pink resumes hand-filled by parents. Walking among those rows of papers felt like browsing a physical database of love. It's a "Love Language" that feels backward to some, but to me, it felt like the ultimate form of parental devotion.

Where smart tech meets the heart

At the Qingyuan Community Center, I saw how this culture of care is being scaled for the future. Founded in 2017, the center serves as a "smart brain" for a neighborhood that was once a rural village.

I shared a moment at their community cafeteria, where elderly residents receive free lunch. One gentleman told me, "This place is pretty nice. It's good for elderly people too. You can eat here, chat here, and have great conversations. This place is wonderful."

From Ba ba (open-air) meetings to support groups for those grieving, Qingyuan proved that "smart cities" are nothing without a human heart.

A feast for the senses

And then, there was the food. I've traveled across China, but Chengdu is in a league of its own. The spice, the depth of flavor, the numbing Sichuan peppercorn—it was hands down the most delicious food I have ever had here. Every meal felt like an invitation to the "slow life."

Fire on the water

We ended the trip on the Jinjiang River. Yesterday, the water was a mirror reflecting the city's stories. Tonight, it became a canvas for fire. Watching the "Liquid Metal" display—where molten iron explodes into golden sparks—I realized that Chengdu's secret is balance. It is a city that sets its traditions on fire to light up its future.

What's next? The road to Beijing

As the neon lights of the Jinjiang fade in my rearview mirror, my journey is far from over. I am now back in Beijing for the Two Sessions.

But I am taking the spirit of Chengdu with me. Over the next week, I will be diving into the halls of power to understand the laws and policies that allow cities like Chengdu to thrive. How does the "happiness code" get written into national policy? What makes a city truly livable in 2026?

Tag along with me as I seek to understand the blueprints behind the quality of life in modern China. The journey from the teahouse to the Great Hall of the People starts now!
