The Ghanaian government has formally protested to the United Nations, demanding an immediate and impartial investigation into a missile strike that targeted its battalion, serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The statement was released on Saturday.
Describing the attack as a “grave violation of international law” that could potentially constitute a war crime, the government emphasized that it undermines the protections guaranteed to United Nations peacekeeping personnel.
"Ghana strongly condemns this attack and calls for the identification and accountability of those responsible,” the statement read.
The government also urged the UN to take all necessary measures to safeguard the Ghanaian contingent and all personnel serving under UNIFIL, recognizing the daily risks they face in carrying out their mission to maintain peace and security in this volatile region.
Assuring Ghanaian peacekeepers of its commitment to their safety and justice, the statement noted that the government will exhaust all avenues to pursue accountability and enhance their security.
The incident occurred on Friday, when two Ghanaian soldiers were critically injured after missiles struck their base in southern Lebanon amid ongoing hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. UNIFIL, which has operated in Lebanon since 1978, plays a critical role in monitoring ceasefires and supporting stability in the region.
