A massive landslide in southern Ethiopia’s Gamo Zone has claimed 107 lives and forced more than 3,400 people from their homes, officials reported on Saturday.

The disaster was triggered by heavy rains late Tuesday, burying large sections of land. Rescue teams have managed to pull one person alive from the debris.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited the affected communities, offering condolences and pledging support from the government to those affected. He stressed the importance of long-term planning and preventive measures to avoid similar tragedies.

“Proper studies and actions must be taken to address this issue sustainably,” Abiy wrote on social media.

The head of the South Ethiopia Regional State, Tilahun Kebede, advised residents to seek higher ground as rainfall continues, noting the risk of further landslides.

The country is observing a three-day national period of remembrance that began Saturday.
