Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has urged citizens and businesses to use fuel sparingly as global supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East affect fuel availability.

In a statement posted on social media, the Abiy said countries that rely on fuel imports are struggling to secure supplies due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Consequently, he warned, Ethiopia could face challenges accessing fuel until the situation stabilizes and normal supply systems resume.

"Therefore, until the problem is resolved and we return to a normal oil supply system, we must use oil sparingly and prioritize basic needs," the PM said in a post on social media.

The call for conservative fuel use comes as the US-Israel-Iran conflict strangles shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that normally handles a fifth of the world's oil supply.

The Ethiopian government is seeking to have available fuel directed toward critical sectors while the country manages the temporary disruption in supply.
