Kenya's National Police Service has launched a multi-agency investigation in Kericho County following the discovery of a suspected mass grave at a public cemetery, where witnesses claim up to 14 bodies, some showing signs of mutilation, were buried under suspicious circumstances.

The case came to light on March 21. Police spokesman Michael Muchiri confirmed that the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness.

"At this preliminary stage, we are seeking to establish the veracity of the claims," he said in a statement. "Some witnesses have since recorded statements, and efforts are underway to locate and interview more persons of interest," he added. 

Formal exhumation is expected to begin on March 23 following the issuance of a court order, allowing forensic examination and identification of the deceased. 

Police have appealed for public calm while investigations continue and urged anyone with information to come forward. While discoveries of bodies in unconventional locations such as dumpsites, forests, or rivers have occurred in Kenya in the past, the organized nature of this alleged burial has raised serious concerns among local residents and authorities.
