Gunmen kill dozen in Jos as retaliatory mob violence leaves 10 more dead

At least 12 people were killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a bar-restaurant in the Anguwan Rukuba area of Jos, northern Nigeria, on Sunday, local sources said.

The shooting in the North district prompted a mob to retaliate, killing at least 10 more, according to residents.

A Plateau State Red Cross official, Nurudeen Hussaini Magaji, confirmed the initial deaths at the scene.

"The attackers shot people at a joint. We are told that 12 people died on the spot," Mangalle Idris, a local youth leader, said. He added that a mob then formed and "attacked people who were either passing or doing business, and they killed them," killing 10 in total.

The state government has launched investigations but has not released an official death toll or named any suspects.

Authorities imposed a curfew in Jos North from Sunday through Wednesday in response to the violence.

Plateau State has a history of recurring violence, often linked to disputes between farmers and herders. While Jos has seen sectarian clashes in the past, such large-scale, deadly incidents in the city itself have been rare in recent years.
