EgyptAir has cancelled its Hajj flights to and from Mali, affecting more than 4,000 prospective pilgrims, according to Mali’s pilgrimage authorities.

The decision comes amid deteriorating security conditions in Mali, where recent coordinated attacks by jihadist and separatist groups have targeted military positions and key infrastructure. The violence has intensified in recent days, with reports of restricted access routes to the capital, Bamako.

Officials said the suspension was driven by both security concerns and rising operational costs, including higher aviation fuel prices.

The cancellations affect nearly a third of Mali’s Hajj quota of 13,323 pilgrims for 2026, raising uncertainty for thousands planning to travel to Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage.

Authorities acknowledged the disruption, saying the move has caused concern among affected travelers.

They added that high-level discussions are ongoing to explore alternative arrangements and ensure pilgrims can still undertake the journey under suitable conditions.
