India issued a chair’s statement on Friday at the conclusion of the annual BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, instead of a joint statement. It said there were differing views among some members on the situation in the Middle East.

The meeting brought together members of the expanded BRICS grouping, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

Iran and the United Arab Emirates are on opposing sides in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, during which Iran has targeted the UAE more than any other Gulf country.

According to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, ministers called for stronger international efforts on peace and security.

"They called on the international community to respond to these challenges and associated security threats through politico-diplomatic measures to reduce the potential for conflict. They stressed the need to engage in conflict prevention efforts, including addressing their root causes. They encouraged the active role of regional organizations in conflict prevention and resolution and supported all efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of crises," it said.

It added that members stressed the indivisibility of security and reaffirmed support for resolving international disputes through dialogue, consultation and diplomacy.
