A deadly Ebola outbreak spreading across parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda has renewed global concern over one of the world’s most dangerous infectious diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the epidemic a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, warning that insecurity, population movement, and delayed detection are complicating efforts to contain the virus.

The current outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is currently no licensed vaccine. Health authorities say eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the epicenter of transmission, with imported cases also reported in Uganda.

According to recent figures from international health agencies, the current outbreak has recorded more than 900 suspected cases and over 100 confirmed infections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, alongside more than 100 suspected deaths. Uganda has also confirmed several cross-border infections linked to the outbreak, including one death reported in the capital, Kampala.

Public health experts say early detection remains one of the most important tools in controlling outbreaks.

The WHO and regional health agencies warn that the outbreak is being exacerbated by conflict, population displacement, and pressure on healthcare systems in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Humanitarian organizations say that attacks on health facilities and mistrust among some communities are also hindering response efforts.

Neighboring countries have strengthened border screening and preparedness measures to reduce the risk of further spread.
