Africa’s representatives at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have finalised where they will set up base camps during the tournament following an “extensive and collaborative” process with the global football governing body.
FIFA on Monday confirmed the official team base camps for all 48 qualified nations, with African teams spread across all three host countries — the United States, Mexico and Canada — ahead of the June 11–July 19 tournament.
Morocco, Senegal and Ghana are among the African nations opting for bases in the US, while South Africa and Tunisia are among the teams based in Mexico.
The selection of team base camps is considered a key logistical and strategic decision, with teams typically remaining at these sites for most of the tournament and travelling to match venues shortly before games.
“Team Base Camps are an integral part of the fabric of any FIFA World Cup,” said Heimo Schirgi, FIFA World Cup 2026 chief operating officer.
“They are where teams put down roots, train and recuperate, and experience the day-to-day rhythms of the tournament.”
Africa will have a record 10 teams at the 2026 World Cup following FIFA’s expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 nations.
Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Algeria, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo secured qualification, and will represent the continent at football’s biggest showpiece.
Morocco, who became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in Qatar in 2022, will be based in the New York–New Jersey area at The Pingry School, while Senegal will also stay in the same region and train at Rutgers University.
Ghana have chosen Bryant University in Boston as their training base, while Egypt will be located in Spokane, Washington, at Gonzaga University.
South Africa are among seven participating nations based in Mexico, selecting Pachuca’s Universidad del Futbol as their base, while Tunisia will stay in Monterrey at the Rayados Training Centre.
Algeria will be based in Kansas City at the University of Kansas, with Cape Verde choosing Tampa, Florida, and Côte d’Ivoire heading to Philadelphia.
DR Congo, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, will be based in Houston.
FIFA said 39 teams will be based in the United States, seven in Mexico and two in Canada.
Iran’s late switch from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico also drew attention following concerns linked to US visa restrictions. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico would allow the Iranian team to be based there.
