Guinea's ruling coalition has won a majority in legislative elections, provisional results showed on Friday, strengthening President Mamady Doumbouya's hold on power.

The pro-Doumbouya Generation for Modernity and Development (GMD) coalition and its allies secured at least 100 of the country's 147 parliamentary seats, according to the electoral authority.

The vote strengthens the mandate of the former military commander, who took power in a 2021 coup and was elected president for a seven-year term in December in a poll challenged by opponents.

Turnout reached 52.87% in the parliamentary vote and 58.51% in local elections held on the same day.

Election authorities said parties have eight days to contest individual results before the final outcome is certified.

The elections took place without the participation of major opposition parties after several groups, including those linked to former President Alpha Conde and opposition figures Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Toure, were dissolved by the government.
