The Democratic Republic of the Congo confirmed its latest Ebola outbreak on May 15 after cases were identified in Ituri Province.

Since then, infections have been confirmed in neighboring Uganda, raising serious concerns about wider regional spread across vulnerable cross-border areas.

As health authorities work to contain the outbreak, they face a range of deep-rooted challenges. These include local conflict and widespread misinformation, as well as severe funding shortages and weak healthcare systems that hinder effective medical response.

Consequently, the World Health Organization has designated the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Africa, like the rest of the world, is now racing against time in collective efforts to halt further transmission.
