The wait is finally over.
Today, June 11, the biggest football tournament on the planet kicks off as co-hosts Mexico take on South Africa at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The match brings a sense of déjà vu as 16 years ago Bafana Bafana hosted the 2010 World Cup and faced Mexico in the opening match at Soccer City in Johannesburg.
South Africa's Siphiwe Tshabalala lit up the occasion with a stunning opening goal, but the match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.
Now the roles are reversed as South Africa travels to Mexico as the visitors, hoping to write another memorable chapter.
The Azteca becomes the first stadium to host three World Cup openers and is the perfect stage for the expanded 48-team tournament lasting 39 days.
The opening ceremony will feature artists like South Africa's Tyla, Colombian star Shakira, and Nigeria's Burna Boy.

Mexico's home soil pressure
As one of the co-hosts alongside the US and Canada, Mexico carries the weight of expectation.
The team topped CONCACAF qualifying and boasts a squad full of familiar faces and rising talent.
Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa makes a historic sixth World Cup appearance and striker Raul Jimenez brings experience.
Coach Javier Aguirre, who played for Mexico at the 1986 World Cup and later coached the team in 2002 and 2010, is now in his third spell in charge.
The 67-year-old said he hopes to instill confidence and emotional balance in the squad.
A win would send a clear message in Group A, which also includes South Korea and Czechia.

Will South Africa spring a surprise?
Hugo Broos' side earned their ticket by topping their CAF qualifying group, marking their fourth World Cup appearance.
Broos expressed confidence in his side, adding that his players had adapted to the city's altitude after arriving early.
Key players like left-back Aubrey Modiba will be looking to frustrate the hosts.
Between the goalposts is Ronwen Williams, who was crowned Goalkeeper of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards.
Beyond the result, this match symbolizes something bigger. It's a meeting of two football-loving nations that have both tasted the joy and heartbreak of hosting the biggest football tournament.
