At least nine people were killed and 11 others injured after unidentified gunmen attacked a community in Nigeria's northern Kaduna State, authorities said on Wednesday.

The attack occurred late Tuesday in Ungwan Magaji community in Kauru Local Government Area, where residents had gathered to mourn a deceased relative.

According to Sunday Katung, a member of Nigeria's National Assembly representing Kaduna South, the assailants opened fire on mourners before fleeing into a nearby forest.

Katung described the attack as "inhuman and unacceptable", condemning the violence and expressing condolences to the families of those killed.

"The attackers targeted innocent people who had gathered for a mourning ceremony," he said, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility.

Security agencies have launched investigations into the latest incident, while local leaders have urged authorities to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities.
