Indian PM Modi arrives in Seychelles and begins three-day state visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Seychelles on Saturday to begin a three-day official state visit, marking a significant moment in Indian Ocean diplomacy and maritime partnership.

At the invitation of Seychellois President Dr. Patrick Herminie, Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour on arrival at Seychelles International Airport in Mahé.

Celebrating 50 Years of Independence

The high-profile visit coincides with Seychelles' Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations. Modi is attending the historic event as Guest of Honour, celebrating 50 years of independence for the archipelagic nation and its long-standing diplomatic relationship with India.

Strengthening the Global South and Maritime Security

Bilateral discussions between Modi and President Herminie are expected to cover a wide range of mutual interests, including infrastructure development, public health, and trade and economic cooperation.

"Seychelles is a valued maritime neighbour and a close friend in the Indian Ocean," Modi stated. "Together, we will work to advance the progress of our peoples and promote security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region."

A central pillar of the talks includes maritime security cooperation under India's "Vision MAHASAGAR" (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions). The visit also reinforces both nations' shared commitment to elevating the geopolitical priorities and economic voices of the Global South.
