The Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ebola outbreak has surpassed 1,700 confirmed infections after health authorities reported 147 new cases, bringing the total to 1,708, while the death toll rose by 74 to 580.

The latest figures show 680 patients remain in isolation or receiving hospital care, while 280 people have recovered, including 27 new recoveries reported in the latest update. Health teams are tracing 75.2% of identified contacts as they work to contain the spread of the virus.

The outbreak has also expanded geographically, with Boga Health Zone becoming the latest affected area in Ituri, the epidemic's epicenter, bringing the province's total to 25 affected health zones. North Kivu remains under heightened surveillance across 11 health zones, while South Kivu has recorded three confirmed cases and one death.

Health authorities said response efforts remain focused on surveillance, patient care, and community engagement. More than 9,000 people have been reached through home visits, radio campaigns, and awareness activities, while health facilities continue to receive essential medicines and infection prevention supplies.

The outbreak's overall case fatality rate stands at 34%. The current epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment. This leaves early detection, isolation, contact tracing, and supportive care as the primary tools for containing transmission.
