Guinea on Friday held the inaugural session of its new National Assembly at the People's Palace in Conakry, marking the official commencement of its 10th legislature, the first under the Fifth Republic established under the new constitution.
In a vote, Dansa Kourouma, former president of the National Transitional Council, was elected speaker of the 147-seat National Assembly with 129 votes in favor, and 18 declared invalid.
Guinea's latest parliamentary elections were held in late May. The National Assembly is the lower chamber of a bicameral parliament introduced under the West African country's new constitution of 2025. It is directly elected for a five-year term.
The lower house's inauguration marks another step in advancing Guinea's institutional transition.
