Sudan has restored operations at about 75% of its hospitals and primary healthcare facilities and secured $293 million in international funding to rebuild its conflict-stricken health system, Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim said on Sunday.

Speaking in Khartoum, Ibrahim said the government is shifting from emergency medical response to long-term recovery following the health ministry's return to the capital. He said a nationwide rebuilding plan, known as the "Hope Strategy, "will be launched on Wednesday with support from the World Health Organization to strengthen primary and specialized healthcare services.

The funding includes an $83 million World Bank project, two African Development Bank projects worth $70 million, and a $140 million Global Fund agreement to support malaria and HIV programs, immunization and vaccination systems. Ibrahim said Sudan has also secured commitments of about $150 million over the next three years.

Sudan's health sector has been devastated since conflict erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, leaving hundreds of health facilities damaged or closed and increasing the risk of outbreaks including cholera, measles, dengue fever and malaria.
